Argentina vs Uruguay: The World Cup Qualifier Match between Argentina and Uruguay is on November 17 at 5:45 pm Nepal time and 00:00 UTC.

Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions, aim to maintain their flawless start in the 2026 CONMEBOL qualifiers as they host Uruguay at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires on Thursday night.

Their opponents, Uruguay, seek to build on their hard-fought triumph over South American giants Brazil in the previous qualifier last month.

Previewing the Match:

Argentina enters Thursday’s clash in high spirits, having won their last 14 international matches across all competitions, scoring 34 goals. La Albiceleste has also kept eight consecutive clean sheets since their World Cup victory in December last year against France.

Under the guidance of coach Lionel Scaloni, Argentina is the sole South American nation with a perfect record in the first four CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers, defeating Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Peru. They currently top the 10-team table with a five-point lead.

In their last outing, Argentina secured a 1-0 victory against Paraguay with a third-minute goal from Nicolas Otamendi, followed by a Lionel Messi brace in a 2-0 away win over Peru.

With a win on Friday, Argentina aims to extend their lead to eight points over second-placed Uruguay and carry their momentum into a showdown with Brazil next Wednesday.

Argentina’s confidence is buoyed by their unbeaten record in the last seven meetings with Uruguay, winning the last three encounters by a total score of 5-0.

Uruguay, sitting second in the CONMEBOL standings, responded well to their September loss against Ecuador, earning four points in qualifiers against Colombia and Brazil last month. A 2-2 draw with Colombia, featuring a 90th-minute penalty from Darwin Nunez, was followed by a historic 2-0 win over Brazil, marked by a 42nd-minute header from Nunez and a goal by Nicolas de la Cruz.

Despite their current standing, Uruguay faces a tight competition, with only three points separating them from eighth-placed Chile. Coach Marcelo Bielsa, an Argentina-born strategist, aims to improve Uruguay’s away form, having won only two of their last nine World Cup qualifiers and conceding at least twice on five occasions.

The last time Uruguay defeated Argentina was in October 2013, while their last win on Argentine soil dates back to July 1987 in the Copa America playoffs, leading to a 1-0 victory before lifting the title.
